The short answer: the Shanghai Stock Exchange opens for continuous trading at 9:30 a.m. China Standard Time. That is 9:30 PM EDT through October 31, 2026, and 8:30 PM EST from November 1, 2026, on the US evening before the Chinese trading day. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange keeps the same hours.

China A-share market hours in Eastern Time

China Standard Time (CST) is UTC+8 all year. Mainland China does not observe daylight saving time.

EDT applies from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. EST applies the rest of the year. In 2026, US clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1.

Note that "CST" here means China Standard Time, not US Central Standard Time.

Long holiday closures

Mainland exchanges close for public holidays, and two of them run for about a week: the Spring Festival around Lunar New Year, usually in late January or February, and National Day Golden Week starting October 1. The exchanges publish the exact dates each year.

Price limits

Most mainland stocks have a daily price limit of 10% above or below the previous close. Stocks on the STAR Market and ChiNext boards generally have a 20% limit. When a stock reaches its limit, it can keep trading, but only at prices within the band.

Following Chinese stocks from the US

US investors often track China through funds such as the iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) or the iShares China Large-Cap ETF (FXI). Many of these funds hold Hong Kong-listed shares rather than mainland A-shares, so check each fund's holdings. They trade during New York hours, while Shanghai is closed.
