The short answer: the Hong Kong stock market, home of the Hang Seng Index, opens at 9:30 a.m. Hong Kong time. That is 9:30 PM EDT through October 31, 2026, and 8:30 PM EST from November 1, 2026, on the US evening before the Hong Kong trading day.

Half-day sessions

On the eves of Christmas, New Year and Lunar New Year, Hong Kong usually runs a morning session only, with no afternoon trading. The closing auction then follows the noon close.

Trading in severe weather

Since September 23, 2024, the exchange has stayed open when a typhoon signal No. 8 or higher or a black rainstorm warning is in force. Before that change, such warnings could cancel part or all of a trading day.

Hang Seng and mainland stocks

The Hang Seng Index tracks the largest companies listed in Hong Kong, many of which have most of their business in mainland China. Hong Kong opens at the same local time as Shanghai and Shenzhen, but closes an hour later. Through the Stock Connect programs, some mainland investors trade Hong Kong stocks and vice versa, and those links follow both markets' holiday calendars.

Following Hong Kong from the US

US-listed funds such as the iShares MSCI Hong Kong ETF (EWH) trade during New York hours, while Hong Kong is closed. Their moves may not match the next Hang Seng session.
