The short answer: India's two main exchanges, the National Stock Exchange (NSE, home of the Nifty 50) and BSE (home of the Sensex), open for regular trading at 9:15 a.m. India Standard Time. That is 11:45 PM EDT through October 31, 2026, and 10:45 PM EST from November 1, 2026, on the US evening before the Indian trading day.

Indian stock market hours in Eastern Time

India Standard Time (IST) is UTC+5:30 all year. The half-hour offset is why the conversions do not fall on the hour.

EDT applies from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. EST applies the rest of the year. In 2026, US clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1.

During the pre-open session, orders are collected for about eight minutes and an opening price is set before regular trading starts. In the closing session, trades take place at the closing price.

No lunch break

Unlike Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai, the Indian market trades continuously from open to close.

Holidays and Muhurat trading

The exchanges close for a list of national and religious holidays that they publish each year. On Diwali, which is a market holiday, the exchanges usually hold a short evening session called Muhurat trading. The time is announced shortly before the festival, and in Eastern Time it typically falls during the US morning.

Following Indian stocks from the US

US-listed funds such as the iShares MSCI India ETF (INDA) trade during New York hours. Most of their trading happens after the Indian market has closed for the day.
