When Does the ASX Open in EST? Australian Stock Market Hours in Eastern Time

The short answer: the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) opens at 10:00 a.m. Sydney time. In US Eastern Time, that is 7:00 PM on the previous evening until November 1, 2026, then 6:00 PM until March 14, 2027.
Australia is usually the first major stock market to open each trading day.
Why the ASX time changes three ways
Sydney observes daylight saving time from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. The US observes it from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Because the two periods are in opposite seasons and do not line up, the gap between Sydney and New York changes four times a year.
| Period | Sydney clock | New York clock | ASX open (ET) | ASX close (ET) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 4–Nov 1, 2026 | AEDT (UTC+11) | EDT (UTC-4) | 7:00 PM | 1:00 AM |
| Nov 1, 2026–Mar 14, 2027 | AEDT (UTC+11) | EST (UTC-5) | 6:00 PM | 12:00 AM |
| Mar 14–Apr 4, 2027 | AEDT (UTC+11) | EDT (UTC-4) | 7:00 PM | 1:00 AM |
| Apr 4–Oct 3, 2027 | AEST (UTC+10) | EDT (UTC-4) | 8:00 PM | 2:00 AM |
All opening times fall on the US evening before the Australian trading day.
ASX session times
| Session | Sydney time |
|---|---|
| Pre-open (orders entered, no trades) | 7:00–10:00 a.m. |
| Staggered open | 10:00 a.m. to about 10:09 a.m. |
| Normal trading | Until 4:00 p.m. |
| Closing single price auction | About 4:10–4:12 p.m. |
At the open, stocks start trading in groups based on the first letter of their code. Stocks beginning with A or B open first, at 10:00 a.m., and the last group follows about nine minutes later.
Following Australian stocks from the US
US-listed funds such as the iShares MSCI Australia ETF (EWA) trade during New York hours, after the ASX has closed.
