GM (GM) Q3 2026 Earnings: Profit Rises, Cash Flow Guidance Raised, $20 Billion Buyback Approved

General Motors reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 20. Its earnings release shows revenue of $50.0 billion, up 2.9% from $48.6 billion a year earlier.
Profit and cash flow
Net income attributable to stockholders was $3.3 billion, or $3.73 per diluted share, compared with $1.3 billion and $1.35 a year earlier, when results carried larger charges. EBIT-adjusted, GM’s preferred operating measure, was $4.1 billion, up 21.6%, for an 8.2% margin. North America produced $3.6 billion of that at an 8.7% margin, while international operations and GM Financial both declined. Adjusted automotive free cash flow was $5.9 billion, up 40%.
Guidance moves up at the midpoint
GM narrowed its full-year EBIT-adjusted range to $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion from $14.0 billion to $16.0 billion, and raised adjusted automotive free cash flow guidance to $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion from $9.5 billion to $11.5 billion. Adjusted diluted EPS guidance is now $12.75 to $13.75. Reported net income for the year is expected at $8.9 billion to $9.5 billion. These are management forecasts and exclude future special items.
Buyback and dividend
The company completed the $6.0 billion repurchase program announced in January and the board approved a new $20.0 billion authorization with no expiration date. Shares outstanding were 849 million at September 30, down from 904 million at the end of 2025 and 1.2 billion at the end of 2023. A quarterly dividend of $0.18 per share is payable December 17.
What to compare next
For readers following GM, the gap between reported and adjusted figures matters this year: trailing reported earnings still carry late-2025 charges, which is why the trailing P/E on the site’s undervalued stocks page looks higher than the adjusted multiple. The shrinking share count is the other number to watch, since it lifts per-share figures even when total profit is flat.
