Akamai has announced a seven-year cloud agreement under which Anthropic has committed approximately $11.6 billion for dedicated computing capacity and managed support services.

For a company historically known for content delivery and cybersecurity, the contract is a major validation of its push into distributed cloud infrastructure. It is also a capital-intensive commitment whose economics depend on Akamai delivering capacity on schedule.

What the Anthropic commitment covers

Anthropic plans to use Akamai's distributed infrastructure for growing CPU workloads. The Form 8-K says payment is subject to delivery and service-availability requirements and describes termination rights for breaches, outages and certain other events.

The announced relationship could expand by another $9 billion, taking its potential value to about $20 billion. That additional amount is an option for expansion, not contracted revenue today.

Revenue comes after a large buildout

Akamai's presentation estimates approximately $5.5 billion of cumulative capital expenditures for the $11.6 billion commitment. About $1.7 billion is expected in 2026 and $3.1 billion in 2027.

The company expects only $150 million to $300 million of related revenue in 2027, with service starting late in its second quarter and ramping later in the year. Full contracted run-rate is anticipated by the end of 2028, followed by roughly $1.7 billion of annual revenue over the remainder of the term.

This timing distinction is essential. Contracted value is not current revenue, and equipment purchases can precede customer payments and depreciation by many months.

The warrant creates another tradeoff

Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant that could represent up to approximately 5% of Akamai's common stock on an as-converted basis. About 2% is expected to vest with the initial commitment; further portions are connected to expansion.

The warrant aligns Anthropic with the partnership but creates potential dilution. Investors should weigh that cost alongside the revenue, margins, cash generation and customer concentration.

The contract is a transformative commercial win. Its financial success will depend on financing the buildout, meeting service obligations and converting the headline commitment into profitable cash flow.
