What this pillar measures
The scale pillar: putting a large national balance into per-resident terms without assigning it as an individual liability.
Each daily debt observation is divided by the latest available U.S. resident population observation dated on or before that day. Population comes from POPTHM in thousands, so it is multiplied by 1,000 before division. “Resident” includes people who are not citizens; it is not a taxpayer count.
How to read the chart
The result is dollars per person. It can rise because total debt increases or because the population denominator changes. A new monthly population estimate may alter the ratio even when the debt changes only slightly.
Illustration: $40 trillion divided by 340 million residents equals about $117,647 per resident. Using 34 million instead would create a tenfold error, which is why the population unit matters.
What moves this measure
The national debt is the numerator and is updated more frequently than population.
Population estimates and revisions change the denominator and can affect comparisons across releases.
What it does not tell you
This is not a personal invoice, a household average, or the taxes someone will owe.
It does not account for age, income, wealth, tax contributions, or the distribution of government benefits.
When the numbers change
Debt is daily and population is monthly. Both observation dates are shown. Each per-resident value uses reported debt and the latest population observation on or before that debt date; no between-update extrapolation is added.
Why does the address say “citizen” while the chart says “resident”?
The older address is retained so existing links work. The label reflects the actual population series: residents, not only citizens.

Divides Treasury total public debt outstanding in dollars by resident population (FRED POPTHM, in thousands, multiplied by 1,000). Each daily debt observation uses the latest population observation on or before that date. Population is monthly and is not a live headcount.
