Adobe's Next CEO: What Anil Chakravarthy Inherits After Q3
Adobe's upcoming CEO transition is a separate story from its latest earnings beat. The company announced on September 3 that Anil Chakravarthy will become president and CEO and join the board on December 1, 2026. Shantanu Narayen will become executive chair.
The timing matters: this was announced before the September 10 earnings release. It is not a new appointment first disclosed during Q3 earnings, and Chakravarthy is not yet the CEO as of this article's publication.
An enterprise background meets a broad product portfolio
Chakravarthy leads Adobe's Customer Experience Orchestration business and worldwide field operations. He joined Adobe in 2020 and previously led Informatica, according to Adobe's announcement.
That background provides a reason to watch how enterprise relationships influence the next phase of Adobe's strategy. It does not prove that the company will prioritize enterprise buyers at the expense of individual creators. A leadership biography is context, not a confirmed product roadmap.
Three questions for the transition
First, how will Adobe balance simpler AI-assisted creation with the precision and control that professional users require? Those needs can overlap, but they are not identical. Features that shorten a beginner's workflow may not replace the tools a professional needs to deliver a final production.
Second, how will management demonstrate that paid AI usage adds to customer spending rather than merely redistributing it? Product adoption and financial contribution should be measured separately.
Third, what financial priorities will guide investment and capital returns? Investors should look for concrete targets and consistent reporting, not infer a new strategy from the appointment alone.
Continuity is not the same as certainty
Narayen's planned executive-chair role creates continuity at the board level. It does not remove execution risk or tell investors how day-to-day decisions will change.
Our view is that the transition should be assessed through subsequent decisions: product delivery, customer retention, investment choices, and the clarity of financial communication. A new CEO can change priorities, but the appointment itself is neither proof of a turnaround nor evidence of deterioration.
